Obituary

Joseph T. Loughlin, 87 of Sun City, Huntley, passed away on Thursday morning, November 9, 2017 at Centegra Hospital in Huntley.

He was born November 25, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Joseph T. and Margaret (Walsh) Loughlin. He grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Xavier High School in Manhattan. He obtained his Bachelor’s of English degree from St. Louis University. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for four years. Following his discharge he moved to Montgomery, Alabama and began a career in the television broadcast business. Joseph moved through the ranks in the broadcast business working for WLAC Television in Nashville, later, he anchored the 11 o’clock news at WTVT in Tampa, Florida. He became the News Director while he was at WCBS Television in New York and became the General Manager in Milwaukee at WVTV. Joseph joined the Chicago Tribune Stations and served as General Manager in Denver at KWGN Television and then WGN in Chicago, retiring in the late 1980’s. In retirement he worked with the Chicago Archdiocese. He was an avid reader and enjoyed swimming, he was a member of the Sting Ray Swimming Club in Sun City.

He is survived by his life partner, Carol Baffa of Huntley, his son, Ian (Shelly) Loughlin of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, his grandchildren, Brody and Owen, his sister, Margaret McGrane of Tampa and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph III and his sisters, Jeanne and Eileen.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14th at the DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral & Cremation Service, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley and on Wednesday, November 15th at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley from 9:00 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass. So sorry to hear of his passing. I met Joe at WGN TV and was fortunate enough to see him and Carol every year at our annual dinner. He was truly one of the nicest people I've ever met. I know he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

I am so blessed to have known Joe. Not only was he a true gentleman, he was Joe Cool! One of the coolest guys I ever known! I loved all his fascinating stories, his goofy jokes but most of all, how he loved Carol. So, here’s to a man who is so loved and who’s memories will be cherished forever. Joe, you will be missed tremendously.
