Henry “Hank” V. Hemmingsen, 90, of Union passed away Saturday December 2, 2017 at Journey-Care Hospice in Woodstock while surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 14, 1927, in Glen Ellyn, IL, to Niels and Magda (Jessen) Hemmingsen. He married Marion E. Gahl on October 18, 1947 in Union, IL.

Hank was a proud dairy farmer in Union for fifty years. He was a graduate of Marengo Community High School. In 2013, he was recognized and inducted into the MCHS Hall of Fame for Teamwork as a 1942 championship football team member. In addition, he was a “die hard” Green Bay Packers fan.

During his life he served on the local elementary school board of education, was a fire department trustee, and a farm bureau board member for whom he was honored by having his farm’s local rural road named after his family’s namesake. He was also a fifty-year Shriner with the Marengo Lodge of the Rockford Tebala Shrine. Hank was a member of the Union St. John’s United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife Marion of 70 years and four children; Douglas (Linda) Hemmingsen of Burnsville, NC, Brenda (Dale) Moehling of Union, Adele (Steven) Weskerna of Marengo, and Richard (Sharon) Hemmingsen of Union, twelve grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and a grandson.

Visitation will be on Saturday, December 16 at Church from 10am until the time of the service with Rev. David Inglis officiating an 11 a.m. memorial service on Saturday December 16, 2017 at the St. John’s United Church of Christ, 17824 Jefferson St., Union, IL 60180.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s UCC, P.O. Box 401, Union, IL 60180.

A very fine man and a Union citizen all the way through. He was gifted with long life, a life well lived. My condolence to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Time to stop the medications and just rest now Mr. Hemmingsen.
