PAUL ANDREA SILVIO

Obituary

PAUL ANDREA SILVIO
1934–2018

Woodstock, IL - Paul A. Silvio, 83, of Woodstock, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 in his home surrounded by family. He was born on August 5, 1934 in Chicago, the son of Joseph and Theresa (Muscarello) Silvio. On June 24, 1961, Paul married Marcia D. Janis at St. Gerald’s Catholic Church in Oak Lawn, IL.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Marcia; his children Paulette (Phil) Gregorcy, Annette (Dennis) Bechtold, and Christina (Mark) Haggerty; his grandchildren Casey Bechtold, Lauren Gregorcy, John Paul Gregorcy, Danielle and Brandon Deraney, Austin Gregorcy, Brooke Gregorcy, Sophia Haggerty, Max Haggerty, and Devin Haggerty; his siblings Andre Silvio and Linda (Ted) Frega; his sister-in-law Kay Janis; and nieces, nephews, and other dear relatives and friends.

Paul lived a long, memorable life filled with love and laughter. A most intelligent and generous man, he always provided support and encouragement for his family, friends, and colleagues. He was a proud United States Marine, serving from 1956 to 1958. He also spent over 35 years leading efforts for Kraft Foods in its research and development division. He had both musical and scientific talents, so it was very common to find him playing the organ or singing Italian songs at the kitchen table after coming home from his work making cheese products. Paul enjoyed being active and was a faithful sports fan, with a special love for Chicago teams. He was also an avid train enthusiast, building HO model train scapes, including a winter scene that he would display each Christmastime.

In the mid 1980s, Paul was diagnosed with a very rare motor-neuron disease called Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS), affecting his muscle nerve cells including his mobility and speech. Even after many years facing progressive health challenges, Paul never let the disease control his life. In fact, shortly after diagnosed, he began writing the first of three books to chronicle stories from his life for his grandchildren and share his philosophies and perspective on several topics.

A special visitation for Paul will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at DeFiore Jorgensen Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Rd, Huntley from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. A mass celebrating Paul’s life will be held on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church, 2918 Country Club Rd, Woodstock, with a visitation preceding mass from 10-11 a.m.

The world has lost a truly remarkable man, a man who always kept his sense of humor and never gave up. Our hearts go out to his entire family, but especially to Marcia, who has been so strong and steadfast. Marcia, we will think of you often and keep you in our prayers.

God has welcomed our wonderful cousin Paul. He had humor and kindness for family and friends. He was the family historian and many of us can find ourselves in his two books. Our love and prayers and condolences to Marcia and daughters, Paulette, Annette, and Christina.

We are in awe of Paul’s courage and strength. His kindness and determination were very evident when we met him over 10 years ago. Equally amazing was the support from Marcia and his three lovely daughters and their families. We can all say that we have witnessed unconditional love to the max, for having known the Silvio family.

Your loving smile, your gentle face, no one can fill your vacant place.
