Marion E. Hemmingsen
Marion E. Hemmingsen, 89, of Union passed away peacefully on Friday March 23, 2018 at Alden Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Long Grove, IL after a long and debilitating illness. She was born January 18, 1929, in Rockford, IL, to Wilmer and Elizabeth (Steig) Gahl. She married Henry V. “Hank” Hemmingsen on October 18, 1947 in Union, IL.
Marion was the loving wife of “Hank”, who was a dairy farmer in Union for over fifty years. Together they celebrated 70 years of marriage last October. They raised four children. She was a 1946 graduate of Marengo Community High School.
During her life as a homemaker and mother, she served on the St. John’s United Church of Christ Church Council, was a school cook for Huntley School District 158, and a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and crocheting. She was also known locally for her skill at baking delicious fruit pies, and loved to take casual walks while taking in the beauty of nature.
Survivors include her four children; Douglas (Linda) Hemmingsen of Burnsville, NC, Brenda (Dale) Moehling of Union, Adele (Steven) Weskerna of Marengo, and Richard (Sharon) Hemmingsen of Union, twelve grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her brother Harold Gahl, and sister Sharon (Ken) Albrecht.
She was preceded in death by her husband last December, her parents, one brother Donald, two sisters-in-law, and a grandson.
Rev. James Benzing will officiate an 11 a.m. memorial service celebrating Marion’s life following a 10:00 a.m. visitation on Tuesday April 10, 2018 at the St. John’s United Church of Christ, 17824 Jefferson St., Union, IL 60180.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s UCC, P.O. Box 401, Union, IL 60180.
